Took me a year and a half to reach level 333. Then I went Edge of the Mist, I made level 666 in three months. But that's only because in that first year and a half, I was a tower/keep/castle scout. I was not on the front lines, and sadly was not rewarded for that effort.
Yes GW2 shouldnât feel like a burden to play. Donât grind anything out, just explore and do the orange events that pop up around the map. Try some of the world bosses and jumping puzzles. Dynamic quests are the intended way to level, the hearts are just a way to attract players to where the quests spawn.

Trollocks.5084. First, there aren't really any tanks in GW2. You can build that way, but you won't really be playing a "tank". Plenty of classes can use a shield effectively, though. There's Chronomancer, of course (though you say you don't want to play one of those). There's also Revenant and Guardian healers.
